Bob Pagan
Robert
(Bob) Pagan received his undergraduate training in chemistry and subsequently
worked as a teacher of science for a number of years. During that time, his also
gained some overseas teaching experience in Japan and Brazil. Bob went on to
obtain a Masters Degree in Biotechnology from the University of New South Wales
and worked for many years in the biotechnology industry, including ten years
with a small, innovative membrane research and development company. During this time, Bob gained
considerable experience in the areas of fermentation science, membrane science
and laboratory analysis. In particular, Bob developed expertise in ethanol
fermentation to produce fuel ethanol, and the application of membrane technology
to waste treatment and resource recovery.
Since 1993, Bob has
been based at The University of Queensland, where he
has been extensively involved in providing services to industry on
matters related to environmental management; in particular Cleaner Production.
Projects managed by Bob have included: Cleaner Production and Eco-efficiency
assessments for individual manufacturing companies; sector-wide Cleaner
Production reviews for the metal casting and metal finishing industries;
feasibility assessments of ‘cleaner technologies’ and cost-benefit analyses of
waste management opportunities.
Bob teaches a number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the
University on topics such as Cleaner Production, Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA)
and environmental impact assessment, and supervises student research projects.
In 1995, he established the UNEP Working Group for Cleaner Production in the
Food Industry. The group’s aim is to promote the adoption of Cleaner Production and
to act as a clearing house for information related to Cleaner Production,
environmental management and sustainability in the agri-food sector and others.
Penny Prasad
Penny has worked for the UNEP Working Group for Cleaner
Production since 2000, gaining valuable experience in applying Cleaner
Production to a wide variety of industries. Penny is a chemical engineering
graduate of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and has eight years
experience in the food industry with CSR Refined Sugars Group and National
Foods. Penny has had a wide variety of positions including Shift Superintendent,
Quality Services Manager, Process Engineer and Production Manager with CSR and
Team Leader with National Foods. It was through her role as Environmental
Co-ordinator while working in various positions with CSR that Penny was able to
broaden her knowledge and interest in Cleaner Production and Environmental
Management.
Penny has undertaken Cleaner Production/Eco-efficiency assessments for a wide
range of industries such as large food manufacturers, food service businesses,
poultry growers and metal fabricators and has worked on life cycle assessment
projects for a large power generator and the Queensland Department of Main
Roads. Penny is a qualified internal environmental auditor for the University of
Queensland.
Marguerite Renouf
Marguerite trained originally as an industrial
chemist, and worked for 6 years in mineral processing industries in Australia
and overseas. During this time she developed an interest in the
environmental performance of industry and has since pursued a career in
environmental management. She has accrued 12 years of environmental
management consulting experience, including compliance and due-diligence
auditing, development of Environmental Management Systems, eco-efficiency /
cleaner production assessments and life cycle assessment.
Marguerite's main area of interest and expertise
is the identification and assessment of opportunities for improving the
environmental performance of industry. She has worked mostly with
manufacturing industries (food processing, metal forming and finishing,
electricity generators), but more recently with the agricultural sector.
Marguerite is currently undertaking a
post-graduate research project (PhD) examining the environmental implications of
product diversification in the Queensland sugar industry using life cycle
assessment (LCA). Through this Marguerite has developed considerable
skills in the use of LCA and has been actively contributing to the development
of the technique in Australia.
Nicole Price
Nicole has worked with the UNEP
Working Group for over six years and is interested in fostering community and
industry involvement in environmental management. She has been involved in many
projects with the group including the development of industry toolkits, fact
sheets and training material and recently in preparing and assessing Water Efficiency Management Plans. She has
completed the ecoBiz Facilitators training and is a certified facilitated for the Queensland Environmental Protection
Agency ecoBiz program.
She is a qualified secondary
school science teacher and National Parks and Wildlife Ranger providing her with
excellent teaching and training skills. Prior to her
current position she worked with the Environmental Protection Agency preparing
training packages for rural landholders interested in sustainable land
management practices. Encouraging community involvement and stewardship of
bushland throughout SE Qld was also her primary role as the co-ordinator of
volunteers involved in the state government project ‘NatureSearch’. She has
field experience as a seasonal National Parks and Wildlife Ranger at Bundaberg
which involved a large component of interacting with the public through
interpretative talks and as a wildlife attendant on the Sunshine Coast. She has
worked previously as a research assistant for the University of Queensland,
Gatton on a project investigating how best to evaluate the effectiveness of
protected area management on Fraser Island. She has a further three years
experience with the University as a technical officer assisting academic staff
to prepare teaching materials and field trips. She started her career as
laboratory assistant.
Jane Gaffel
Jane is a Chartered
Environmental Engineer, who graduated with honours from The University of
Queensland, and has a wide range of experience in the environmental field.
She is currently involved in development of eco-efficiency resources for the Food Processing and
Foundry Industries - www.ecoefficiency.com.au. She is also
currently the Dairy Manufactures Sustainability Council Co-ordinator and is involved in preparing Dairy Australia's
Sustainability Report for the 07/08 period. She is also involved in the updating a carbon calculator for the
Sustainable Tourism industry and preparing a greenhouse gas inventory for the Australian Dairy Industry. She has compiled eco-efficiency fact sheets for small
